This resource contains a lesson on using CLAPS (content, language, atmosphere, poetic devices, structure) as either a way of ordering an exam response or using it as a checklist. There is an example response on Remains to read and then several slides asking students to add a linking sentence to the example in order to answer the given essay title. Then groups can work on aspects of CLAPS to produce a response to a question on War Photographer to practice both the concept of CLAPS as a way of responding to a poem and the importance of linking ideas back to the question. An assessment on War Photographer (on conflict) is included, along with a Key Stage 3 marking and feedback sheet which could be used if desired. This feedback sheet contains prompts to help students to DIRT their answers.

This is one complete lesson, analysing Malala’s speech to a group of young people at the United Nations Youth Assembly. She is advocating the importance of the right to education. This lesson looks at her background, to put the speech into context, Aristotles 3 modes of persuasion and how Malala uses it, other rhetorical devices used, a BBC article written a year after and then asks students for their own opinion of Malala. Copy of speech included.

This lesson starts with an introduction to stock characters and a wide range of other descriptive writing techniques using a written description of a scene in a doctor's waiting room. Students answer a set of questions which ask them to identify the writer's techniques and explain the effects. Next, students plan their own descriptive writing using given planning sheets, a range of prompts and some images of a fairground.

The main resource here is the Powerpoint presentation exploring three different possible exam questions for Blood Brothers. This includes a cut out activity as preparation for one of the questions. Once preparation has been completed, students can complete the question in full as a class activity. Other resources include various worksheets looking at Mickey and Eddie's friendship, the characters of Mrs Johnstone and Mrs Lyons and some worksheets analysing characters & themes. These can be adapted for other characters too.

This lesson looks at the context of Emmeline Pankhurst’s speech in Connecticut, 1913, which aimed to persuade the audience to support women’s suffrage. Focuses are on militaristic language, as well as other rhetorical devices and a plenary task comparing her speech for women’s rights with that of Emma Watson. Both speeches are included with this resource.

This two lesson resource gives students an example of a story, for which they can discuss what the candidate has done well and what could be improved. Following this they can use the mark scheme included (from the new spec AQA) to award a level / mark. Using this knowledge of what makes a good narrative, the remaining slides give some prompts and advice about how to go about planning and writing a narrative. Planning sheet and suggested titles is included for students to plan according to what they have learned. The actual story could be written by way of extension.

This is the first four lessons aimed at Y7 or 8 for working in pairs or groups to create their own theme park. Lessons 1 and 2 include some engaging activities to consider the idea of themes and look at examples of existing theme parks. They watch clips, name rides and create 3 rides for a blank dinosaur theme park. Lessons 3 and 4 are geared towards them creating their own theme park map after looking at Chessington World of Adventures’ example and answering some questions to illustrate the importance of a clear and informative park map.

A short unit covering Reading, Writing and Speaking and Listening. Could be used as a whole class unit of work, or small literacy group. Mixed ability but could be differentiated up or down. Extracts (all provided) from Robinson Crusoe, Life of Pi, Lord of the Flies. Real life survivor account analysed for descriptive writing techniques. Students invent their own survivor scenario and write diary entries and descriptions based on the example extracts and trailers shown in lessons. Opportunity to create class island map and use as stimulus for writing. Some lessons may take slightly longer than an hour so I estimate this unit is between 4 and 6 hours of lessons, depending on the pace.

Two lessons that can be delivered remotely, or face to face. Looks at Brooke’s life and how his lack of battle experience influenced his perception of the war, a focus on Brooke’s use of natural imagery by matching up images to quotations in ‘The Soldier.’ Student investigation into whether the poem is a sonnet, using a set of given criteria. Lesson 2 provides a range of questions for students, with answers for teachers, that look at a range of methods used and their effects. Final task asks students to find a piece of music that matches the tone of the poem.
